November 7 2021 Morning Worship

From Peakland United Methodist Church in Lynchburg, VA. Virginia Born statesman Henry Clay first used the term “self-made man" in 1832. Since then, the phrase has become a kind of watchword for our culture. We tend to admire the rugged individualist who stands with firm footing. To set the stage for what we do today, this All Saints Sunday, I want to say to you the church, that is a lie. For us, there really is no such thing as a truly self-made man. From our beginning the scriptures declare we are MADE in the image of God.. The reflection we see in the mirror bears a resemblance to the One who called us into being and can never be purely our own. With God as a common parent, we all bear some resemblance to each other. And, with that realization, our lives are molded by those who have born that image before us, by the saints. It is their gift to us and the gift we bestow upon those who come after us. The gifts of saints nurture and form us.
