Before our son was born I read one of the books on the UMW's reading list titled Night Lights: Bedtime Stories for Parents in the Dark, by Phyllis Theraux. It was autobiographical in nature and she told the story of her youngest child, a boy who remains nameless in the book to protect his innocence. As she puts it, it had been a zig zaggy year for him in school. He was trying to decide whether he wanted to be a student. Her son had a very low opinion of his own thinking ability although he was the only one among his mother and teacher who had any question at all about his ability to pass muster in class.
So there came time for a parent-teacher conference.
