Wisdom Wednesday: Summer Series

Grace and peace to you, I’m Rev. Joe Cailles, the pastor of Peakland United Methodist Church in Lynchburg Virginia. Today is Wednesday, May 29, 2024. A few months ago, a church member of Peakland, Mrs. Lee Ohl, presented these banners which she had made. Each banner has 6 panels featuring beloved Bible stories.. As soon as I saw them, I knew I wanted to do something special with them, so this summer, I’m using the Bible stories featured on the banners as the scripture for Sunday worship services both in Horizons and in the sanctuary. 12 Bible stories over the next 12 Sundays. We’ll begin at the beginning. This first panel depicts the First creation story in Genesis chapter 1, so this Sunday, we’ll read about the creation of light and dark, land and ocean, birds and fish, animals and humans. And they were all very good. This Sunday we’ll explore what the creation story tell us about the relationship between faith and science. In two weeks, we’ll look at the Adam and Eve story. Did they really eat an apple? Was the talking serpent the devil? What does their story tell us about our lives and our faith today? In three weeks, Noah and the Ark and the rainbow. After the flood, God put the rainbow in the sky as a reminder. Will talk about that rainbow reminder means for us Christians. Through the summer, we’ll look at David and Goliath, Daniel in the Lion’s Den, Jonah and the Big Fish. We’ll talk about Jesus birth. Feeding the 5000 with loaves and fishes and Zaccheus and the big tree. I’m grateful to Lee for making these beautiful banners so that we can consider how these beloved bible stories shape our faith today. The Peakland United Methodist congregation has so much happening this summer both here at church and out in the community.
